Description: Mystery writer Marcia Talley will be guest speaker at the first Shady Side Rural Heritage Society's winter luncheon series Jan. 14 at the Captain Salem Avery House Museum, 1418 E.W. Shady Side Road in Shady Side. Doors open at 11 a.m. with the program beginning at 11:30, followed by a luncheon of homemade soup, specialty breads, dessert and beverage. The Brooks Tegler Orchestra

Description: Exactly 70 years after the groundbreaking concert, The Brooks Tegler Orchestra Recreates Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert exactly as it was done on that cold and windy Sunday. Writer, broadcaster and producer John Tegler narrates the story of how the concert came to be and what transpired along the way. The music is recreated from the opening number, "Don't Be That Way" to the closing "Sing, Sing, Sing." The only thing you could compare this performance to would be to the original in 1938!

South River Clean Up

Description: Come meet kindred spirits, get some fresh air and exercise, and help clean up debris from an important 66 acre wooded parcel in the Greenway. Completion of this cleanup effort will clear the way for purchase by Anne Arundel County. The parcel will then become part of over 800 contiguous acres of forests and wetlands owned by the county in the Greenway.
Work gloves, boots and enthusiasm are all that are necessary.

This year’s “Walk for the Woods” is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to explore a piece of wilderness right in the heart of Anne Arundel County! Not yet open to the public, Bacon Ridge Branch Natural Area is a 546 acre protected property in Crownsville projected to become part of the Anne Arundel County park system. Upland streams, lily filled ponds, nesting birds and spring wild flowers are just a few of sights to delight the senses of nature enthusiasts at this event. Hikes range from 1 to 4 miles on marked trials. Each walker will receive a Points of Interest Guide and may hike alone or join a guided bird or naturalist-led walk.
