Anne Arundel County Commission for Women

The Commission for Women is seeking volunteers to help address the issues important to women and families in the county. The Commission serves as a resource and advocacy group and advises officials on issues of significance to women. The Commission consists of 16 members representing a diverse cross section of the community and appointed by the County Executive for a two-year term; appointees are expected to attend monthly meetings ad hoc committees and working group sessions, a one-day annual planning retreat and commission sponsored events. Bates (Wiley H.) Senior Residence (Community Preservation & Dev. Corp.–CPDC)

This senior residence is operated in Annapolis by CPDC, a nonprofit organization that creates and preserves financially sound, socially responsible affordable housing for low and moderate income individuals and families.  There is an immediate need for a volunteer computer instructor to train and assist residents in the use of computers in the computer lab.  For more information, contact Judy Craig at 410-263-1860 or 410-263-1866 or e-mail jcraig@cpdc.org.  See web site: www.cpdc.org.

 

PKD Foundation, Baltimore Chapter

The mission of the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation, Baltimore Chapter is to assist, on a regional and local basis, the national efforts to promote research to find a cure for PKD and to improve the care and treatment of those it affects. A new Volunteer Chapter Coordinator (age 19 and up) is needed to motivate and lead others in fundraising, lobbying, educating the public, organizing events and helping people affected by PKD. The Chapter Coordinator would ideally have skills in leadership, organization, motivation and fund raising and be available to stay in the job at least two years. Providence Center

Providence Center is a nonprofit that provides employment, vocational training, recreational, retirement, medical day care, and transportation services to developmentally disabled adults.  There are immediate openings for volunteers, including mature high school students, in: 1) Arnold as Pottery & Horticultural Assistants, Activity Center & Baldwin Industries Woodworking Aides, and Friendly Visitors; 2) Millersville as Activity Center & Arts Class Aides, Crafts, Woodshop, & Pottery Assistants; and 3) Pasadena as Senior Program Assistant. Secure the Call

This local coalition of over 120 organizations collects used and unwanted cell phones and redistributes them as 911 emergency only phones. Volunteers, age 18 and up, are needed to form groups and go into mapped parts of Anne Arundel County to place Secure the Call phone collection barrels in any place it may be allowed. Save the Coconuts

Originally formed as a walking team to raise funding through participation in the Susan G. Komen and Avon Walks for Breast Cancer in Washington, DC, “Save The Coconuts” is now a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to fight breast cancer in the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County areas. Volunteers are needed for the following fundraising activities:

 

STARS – Speakers, Tutors, Achievement, Retention, Success

STARS is an initiative located at the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel, Maryland.  STARS works with students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to help with achieving academic goals and the necessary life skills to be a success.  Adult male and female volunteers are needed as mentors and/or tutors to work students between the ages of 16 and 24.  Tutors are needed in math and reading to help them prepare for GED and college entrance tests.  Tutoring is offered on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:45 to 5:15.  Tutors may work one or both days each week. Timothy House

This residential facility for the elderly and persons with disabilities needs volunteers to help residents with daily living tasks and handy repairs so that residents can stay independent in their homes. Contact Fred Killian at 301-595-5191 or 410-269-5931.

 

USO Outreach Center, Ft Meade

USO is a non profit organization serving the military and their families through a variety of events and activities, many of which are supported by volunteers. We need volunteers with the skills or experience for the following areas: Administration, Scheduling, Decorating, Event Planning, Outreach, Photography, Property, Publicity and Website. Specific events and activities for which need your help are: Latin Beats, BUNCO, Health/Fitness, Sweetheart Dinner Dance, Children’s Fall Festival, and more. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Annapolis Flotilla 23-1

Volunteer Mobilization Center (VMC) Exercise, August 21, 2010

10:30 am -2:30 pm, Saturday, August 21, 2010, Volunteer Mobilization Center Exercise: A disaster VMC Exercise is being held at Savage Library, 9525 Durness Lane, Laurel, MD 20723. Participants will experience and test the VMC process used by Howard and Anne Arundel County Volunteer Centers to help manage spontaneous volunteers used to mitigate the effects of a disaster such as a hurricane.  Registering such volunteers is more than just paperwork. Community volunteers who are trained to help with this process are encouraged to participate.
